Experiments – Theory – Coding – Hardware exposureA unique opportunity to take a deep dive into the Quantum World.

The programme trains a matched faculty–student pair from each of 30 partner institutions across Coastal Karnataka through a four-stage pedagogy — Observe, Understand, Build, Explore — culminating in the launch of the Coastal Karnataka Quantum Computing Network.

  1. 1

    Observe

Optical experiments on polarization, interference and diffraction.

  2. 2

    Understand

The mathematics and quantum theory behind those phenomena: vectors, superposition, measurement, entanglement and phase.

  3. 3

    Build

Qiskit programming, with jobs run on real IBM Quantum hardware and a practical mini project.

  4. 4

    Explore

A comparative survey of quantum hardware platforms (NMR, trapped ion, superconducting, photonic, neutral atom) and a panel on quantum computing in India.

A two-hour online orientation two weeks before the offline programme covers Python and Qiskit installation, IBM Quantum account setup and a pretest, so no workshop time is lost to setup.

What participants take away

  • A faculty member and a student trained together from each institution, so the capacity stays after the workshop
  • Experiment first: participants see polarization and interference in the lab before the formal theory
  • Hands-on programming on real IBM quantum hardware, not simulators alone
  • Five hardware platforms presented by researchers from IISc, IISER Pune, RRI and IBM
  • Every partner institution leaves with a trained pair, a working IBM Quantum account and an installed Qiskit environment
  • Teaching notes, slides and optical-experiment protocols shared with all participating institutions
  • Launch of the Coastal Karnataka Quantum Network, with each founding member committing to a further quantum activity within six months

Who can take part

30 partner institutions · 60 participants

Open only to institutions in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu districts. Interested faculty and students should approach their Principal to be considered. Each partner institution nominates one faculty member and one student (UG or PG) as a pair, and may send up to three pairs in order of preference. Nominations are reviewed by the organizing team; selected pairs will be informed by email by 7 November 2026, before the online orientation on 18 November 2026.

Nominations: how it works

Form opens17 October 2026
Last date31 October 2026
Selected pairs informed by7 November 2026

Each institution nominates pairs of one faculty member and one student, and may send up to three pairs in order of preference. Read the details below and get your nominees and your Principal's approval ready; the online form opens on this page on 17 October 2026.

Faculty and students who wish to take part: please approach your Principal to be considered for nomination. Nominations come from the institution, not from individuals.

Who can be nominated

  • Only institutions in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu districts
  • One faculty member and one UG or PG student of a Science or Engineering stream, from the same institution
  • 30 institutions, 60 seats in all
  • Both must attend the online orientation on 18 November and all five days, 2–6 December 2026

How to nominate

  • Interested faculty and students approach their Principal, who decides whom to nominate
  • Up to three pairs per institution, ranked 1, 2 and 3 in order of preference
  • Endorsed by the Head of the Institution / Principal
  • Submitted through the online form on this page, 17–31 October 2026

What the form asks for

  • Institution name, district and the Principal's name
  • Name, department, email and phone of both nominees
  • A short statement of interest from each nominee (about 100 words)
  • The institution's plan for one quantum activity within six months of the programme

How the 30 institutions are chosen

  • 80% of the seats (24 institutions) for Udupi and Dakshina Kannada
  • 20% of the seats (6 institutions) for the neighbouring districts: Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu
  • Within each group: the institution's commitment to a follow-up quantum activity and the nominees' statements of interest; date of receipt only as a tie-breaker

If seats remain

  • In the first round, each selected institution's first-preference pair is admitted
  • If seats are still vacant at the end, they are filled from the second- and then third-preference pairs
  • Seats left vacant in one group may be offered to the other

After selection

  • Selected pairs are informed by email by 7 November 2026, with joining details for the online orientation
  • A nominal registration fee of ₹1,200 per faculty member and ₹600 per student, paid only after selection; payment details come with the selection email
  • Details of meals and stay will be shared with the selected participants
  • Each nominee brings a laptop
  • Install Python if you can; help is given at the orientation
  • The IBM Quantum account is set up together during the orientation
